b. 1945, South Yorkshire, England; lives and works in Doncaster, England
Hatfield – A Working Colliery, n.d. (c. 2006) Oil on wood, 110 x 145 cm Collection: National Coal Mining Museum for England, Wakefield
Hatfield is one of the few working mines left in the Yorkshire coalfields. Buckle has made the industrial landscape and especially that created by mining her chief subject. She is fascinated by “the strange colours of these lunar landscapes” (McManners and Wales 2002:186). Here the red sky recalls the hellish night scene at Coalbrookdale depicted by de Loutherbourg, and the simple shapes made more massive by the low viewpoint retain something of the sublime. DA
