Armand Guillaumin was an important member of the Impressionists, though his preferred subject matter obviously differs from their usual fare: Guillaumin’s paintings often portray members of the working class, industrial complexes or urban labour, with which he was quite familiar, since he could not make a living from his art. The scene in Unloading Coal, with coal barges moored at the banks of the Seine River, clearly depicts an industrial landscape. FL
