Heslop, who worked as a putter in the Durham collieries for forty-four years, was one of the first members of the Spennymoor Settlement Sketching Club. The Settlement was founded in 1931, at a time of economic depression, with the aim of educating miners and developing cultural interests. Heslop showed a special gift for watercolour and pastel; although his favourite subject was landscape, he made a number of studies of mining scenes above and below ground, both from memory and life.
