0h!m1gas: biomimetic stridulation environment, 2012 Ant colony, plexibox structure, turntables, audio, camera, monitor, variable dimensions

Kuai Shen conceived 0h!m1gas out of the functional similarity between a turntables (a cultural artefact that produces sound) and the ingenious stridulation organ of some species of ant (a biological artefact responsible for social organisation). Ants are social beings that function in self-sufficient and highly organised matriarchal colonies. Each ant is born with an assigned task, which contributes to the welfare of the entire colony. Some ant species are well known for cutting green leaves, which makes a scratching sound, or stridulation. The green leaves are taken to the nest and processed by other ants until they become a mush. The fungus that grows from this mush then feeds the colony. 0h!m1gas is thus a “biomimetic stridulation environment” that translates the movement and the scratching sounds of the ants into an audiovisual installation. Two turntables respond to movement within the colony and register the resulting collective stridulation sounds via a needle on a vinyl record. Shen hereby explores the relationship between the sociality and productivity of ants on one hand, and human technology on the other. For Manifesta 9, Oh!m1gas has been installed in the former office of the General Director of the Waterschei Mine company in Waterschei. One important detail from that survives in the office’s interior shows a bee, carved in wood. This remarkable carving is a clear indication of the symbolic relationship that the Director perceived between the structure of his company and the division of labour in the colonies of social insects.
